At the heart of LSU’s energy research, the PERTT Lab offers industry-scale capabilities for production, well control, and CO₂/CCUS studies. Our facility is built for real-world simulation, hands-on education, and groundbreaking innovation in oil and gas and the energy transition.


Fluid Handling & Pressure Systems

  • 15,000-gallon water circulating system
  • Two 500-bbl tanks to hold Synthetic and water-based muds from Halliburton
  • Two Halliburton Triplex Pumps (HT-400) capable of high-pressure and high-flow rate
  • Nitrogen Supply System (Two sub-surface storage wells at 4,200psi)
  • Well location allows injection of Nitrogen, Argon, and other gases from 3rd party tanks and trailers
  • High-Pressure Gas Flow system
  • Two Mud Gas Separators (MGS)

  • 5,200-ft Instrumented Well
  • 9 5/8-inch casing
  • 2 7/8-inch tubing
  • 4 downhole P/T gauges at discrete depths
  • Injection line to create influx at well bottom
  • DAS (Distributed Acoustic Sensing)
  • DTS (Distributed Temperature Sensing) measurements

Flow Simulation & Tool Testing

  • Choke Manifold System
    Remotely controlled with chokes from various manufacturers and a full process control setup.
  • MPD Choke System
    Real-time managed pressure drilling (MPD )control for high-risk well scenarios.
  • Valve Performance Flow Loop (VPC)
    API-compliant system for validating 1” and 1.5” gas lift valves.
  • 40-ft Inclinable Tower
    Simulates various tubular inclinations and flow orientations.
  • 100-ft Derrick with 12” Vertical Pipe
    Ideal for riser studies and vertical flow behavior analysis.
  • Multiphase Flow Loop
    Handles 1.5 MMSCFD gas + 200 GPM water for robust multiphase testing.
